FAQ)
I just logged into Webmail for the
first time - where is all my e-mail??
It's probably on the hard drive in the computer that you usually check your mail
from. This is because of the way that POP clients (such as Outlook or Eudora)
work. When somebody sends you an e-mail message, it sits on our mail server
and waits for you to retrieve it. When you check for mail, your POP client
connects to our mail server and downloads your messages onto your computers
hard drive and then deletes them from our mail server.
My address book in Webmail is missing - what happened and how do i get it back?
When moving our Webmail system to a newer, faster server, we found that the
one piece of information that wasn't easy to move over automatically is the
saved addressbook. Few of our customers use this feature, but for those that
do, here's how to move your data:
1) Login to the old webmail
site - be sure to set the server to pop.lmi.net
(not imap.lmi.net) when you login.
2) Click on Address Book, then Import/Export. WE recommend exporting as a
CSV (comma separated values) file. The file will be transferred to your hard
disk, after which it can be if needed be edited with a text editor, or Excel.
3) Now, open the new webmail, click Address Book, then click Import/Export.
Set the format to comma separated values. Click the Choose file button and
select the address book file on you hard disk. You may need to specify which
data goes in which field.
I want to be able to check my mail in two locations! What can I
do?
The good news is that most POP clients have options you can check off
to tell it to leave a copy of messages on the server for a certain amount
of time. You should probably set that for no longer than a month. Seven
days is probably a good number. You should also probably check off any
options to the effect of deleting from the server when deleted from your
inbox. This is to keep you from having to download two copies of the same
piece of spam or large attachment. If you're using POP clients at both
locations instead of the webmail interface, you should probably tell both
POP clients to leave a copy of messages on the server.
Is Webmail secure?
Absolutely! You will notice that by default we use a secure connection (https)
to the webmail server. This means that anything you type (such as your password
to login) in encrypted before sending over the net.
If for some reason the browser you are using does not support secure HTTP,
you can connect with standard HTTP by using http://webmail.lmi.net/horde/imp.
Webmail seems slow..how can i speed it up?
If you have many hundreds or thousands of emails stored on the server, it
takes time for the webmail program to read through and process them, which
can really slow things down. If you're experiencing long delays when using
email, try trimming down how many old emails you keep on the server.
I can't seem to delete email from the webmail interface.
Click the Options button, then "Deleting and Moving messages" under Mail Management.
There is an option "When deleting messages, move them to your Trash folder..." Make
sure this is off (not checked).
Also, you get the error message from your browser "Document Contains No Data" or "Document
is of Zero Length." (typically while using Netscape 4.7), this is nothing to
worry about, as the message actually does get deleted, though you'll need to
refresh your inbox to see it disappear. I was working on an email in Webmail for several hours,
and when i tried to send it, i got an error.
If you spend over three hours composing an email, your session will timeout and the email will be lost. This can be prevented by keeping your session active. An easy way to do this is to turn on automatic checking for new mail under Options, and then keep a window open to your inbox, which will continually refresh looking for new mail.
What is a "username"? Is that the same as my
email address?
For each email address we assign a "username" and password. The username is
often (but not always!) the same as the part of the email before the "@" sign.
Here are two typical examples:
Email address: georgeforman@lmi.net
Username: georgeforman
Password: Big-Hit!
Email address: alice.cooper@crazymusic.com
Username: alicec
Password: t0ngue0nf1re
How can I get my own domain name to appear on my outgoing email?
By default, Webmail will assume your address is "username@lmi.net".
If you want to change this, login to webmail, click the "Options" button,
then "Personal Information". This is where you can specify your full
name and email address.
Can Webmail keep track of my outgoing messages?
Unfortunately, the webmail software we use does not automatically keep copies
of your outgoing messages. However, you can set it to automatically Bcc a copy
of all of you email messages to yourself, using the same or different email
address. You can set this option by clicking the "Options" button,
then "Personal Information". In the field labeled "Address to
BCC all messages", enter the email address you want copies of your outgoing
messages to go to.
Does Webmail work with SpamAssassin?
If you are using SpamAssassin on your mailbox, the message will have a special
string (such as "****SPAM****") inserted in the subject filed of
every message identified as spam. Your regular POP mail client may already
be set to automatically delete or move these messages. In Webmail, you will
need to setup a custom filter to handle these messages. To do this, click the "Filters" button,
then "New Rule". Give the filter a name (such as "SpamAssassin"),
and match where Subject Contains "****SPAM****". You can then elect
to delete all messages that match this rule. Note: The option to have the message
moved to a different folder does not work on with POP accounts. Is there documentation for Webmail?
Our webmail system uses Horde IMP
4.1, one of the most popular and secure webmail programs available.
Horde provides a user
guide with answers to common questions.
