How to setup your email

For each email address, there is a "username" or "login name" and a password. When setting up your computer to check and send email, you will need to know this login and password (supplied to you when you sign up or request new services), and also the mail settings listed below. To check your mail, you can use an "email program" (some examples are Mozilla Thunderbird, Outlook Express, and Apple Mail), or our LMi Webmail. Once you setup this program with your login name, password, and so on, you can check and send email anytime.

If you use LMi to connect to the Internet (through dialup, DSL, or T1), use:

Checking your email while not using LMi for Internet access

You can check your LMi email from anywhere using the settings you would at home with your LMi Internet service. However, if you use a different provider, you must use their Outgoing (or "SMTP") Mail Server to send your mail. For your convienence, here are links to some local providers' instructions:

If you travel with a laptop or simply want to avoid the confusion of using two different companies, request a "roam" (aka Authenticated SMTP) account that lets you send LMi email from anywhere.

Newsgroup (Usenet/NNTP) Settings

While using LMi for Internet access you may use our Usenet news feed. The server name is news.lmi.net. There is no login or password needed. Note that there is an 8GB download limit per month.

To read news or upload and download files, you will need a news reader. Most email programs have built-in news readers, but LMi recommends these programs:

• MT-NewsWatcher (Macintosh)
• Unison (Macintosh)
• Forte Agent (Windows)
• Newsbin (Windows)

In you need access to a specific newsgroup that is not on our server, please send email to service@lmi.net to request that addition.

Server Information

Our primary mail servers use Sendmail running on FreeBSD. Outgoing traffic to port 25 is blocked for our DSL and dialup customers. If you are a DSL or dialup customer and you run your own mail server, email service@lmi.net to opt out of this port blocking.

Restrictions on attachments and mail emailing

Each incoming message is limited to 10MB including attachments, and each outgoing message 20MB including attachments. Bear in mind that when files are attached to email messages, the attached file must be first encoded by your email software, and that process may increase the actual message size.

Certain types of attachments (such as .exe or other executable files) cannot be sent by email except as .zip files.

There is a limit of 66 recipients for any individual message. Messages with more than 66 recipients will not be accepted for relay. If you need to send messages to a larger list of people, you will need to break up your recipient list into smaller chunks. To maintain large lists, use our Mailman list manager.
