PC Web Site Authoring Launch Pad

How to Transfer Your HTML Files to Your Web Page - Web Accounts
PC Users using CuteFTP

Wherever you see "your_login", substitute your own login name (NOT your entire e -mail address!)

1) Connect as normal to LMI.net.
2) Launch CuteFTP. This is a general purpose FTP client that you can use to transfer files to and from your Web directory. If you don't have CuteFTP you can download it from http://www.cuteftp.com.

3) The FTP Site Manager window will come up. Choose "Add Site". Settings:

  • Site Label: Label the new site "My Web Site" or something meaningful to you.
  • Host Address: <machine>.lmi.net [NOTE: When your account is set up we will let you know which machine your pages are hosted on (i.e. kato.lmi.net, spider.lmi.net, blackbass.lmi.net, etc.)]
  • User ID: [your_login]
  • Password: [your_password]
  • Initial Remote Directory: [leave blank]
  • Initial Local Directory: [set to where your HTML files are on your machine]
You can leave the rest of the settings at their defaults.

4) Click on OK. Now your "My Web Site" site is created in your Site manager and will be highlighted. Hit the "Connect" button. It will log you into your home di rectory on the LMI.net server. (Click on OK if you get any Login Messages from t he LMI.net server.)

5) Your CUTEFTP screen will be split into 3 areas: The area at the top displays messages from the LMI.net server. The area on the left displays the file on you local machine. The area on the right displays the files on the remote machine (L MI.net server).

6) Now you will see the www directory in the right side of the screen. Double cl ick on it to open it. Then you will see the docs directory. Double click on it to open it. Now you can upload your HTML and graphics files to your docs directo ry. All you have to do is locate your HTML files on your local machine on the le ft side of the screen and drag them into the docs directory on the right side of the screen. The files will then start transferring to the remote machine.

7) When you are done transferring your files go to the FTP menu and choose "Disc onnect." Then you can quit out of Cute FTP.

NOTES: If you name your home page "index.html", it will load by default. Your UR L will be: http://www.your_domain_name. Important notes about file naming conven tions: All files names are case-sensitive under Unix. Index.html is NOT the same as index.html. All HTML files must have the extension ".html" or ".htm" at the end for them to work.
